Frequently Asked Questions
What is Neurotherapy?
Neurotherapy (also known as QEEG-informed neurotherapy) uses a brain map (quantitative EEG) to identify your unique neural patterns. We then apply targeted interventions—such as neurostimulation and focused brain-training—to help your brain regulate more effectively, improve focus, reduce emotional dysregulation, and support wellbeing.
How do you differ from standard “brain training” or generic neurofeedback?
At The Togetherness Project, we pair rigorous brain-mapping with a systemic, family-inclusive approach. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all model. Instead, we assess your brain’s activity, create a personalised Neurotherapy plan, and involve carers/supports where appropriate to ensure sustainable change. (See similar differentiation here: “Brain mapping and neurofeedback are still quite unregulated … the difference between providers can be significant.”)
Who can benefit from Neurotherapy?
Neurotherapy is suitable for children, adolescents and adults experiencing issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma/PTSD, eating disorders, emotional dysregulation or sleep concerns. We also work with families, carers and systems of support to enhance relational regulation and recovery.
What happens during a brain-mapping session (QEEG)?
We place a sensor cap on the scalp, record brain‐wave activity, and analyse patterns across brain networks. The BrainMap/QEEG helps us understand how your brain is functioning, where dysregulation may lie, and which areas to target in Neurotherapy.
Is Neurotherapy safe? Are there any side-effects?
Yes — Neurotherapy and brain mapping are non-invasive, safe, and do not typically cause distress. Some people may feel mild tiredness or “brain-sore” after early sessions, similar to the feeling after a physical workout.
How many sessions will I need and how often should I do them?
The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, brain-map findings and symptom severity. Many clients begin to notice a change after 10-20 sessions. Typically we recommend doing sessions 2 or 3 times a week at minimum, up to doing an intensive program twice a day - depending on your program.
Can Neurotherapy be used along with other treatments (therapy, medication, nutritional support)?
Absolutely. Neurotherapy is best used as part of an integrative plan. It complements psychotherapy, nutritional support, medication (when prescribed) and other interventions including exercise and somatic approaches. In fact, many growth outcomes occur when multiple levels of care are engaged, and we strongly recommend that you take action on various aspects of your daily life (therapy, medication, nutritionist, etc.).
Are there any contraindications?
There are very few contraindications. For example, a metallic implant in the head may interfere with a brain map recording. Active, unstable psychiatric conditions or un-withdrawn addictions may require stabilisation first.
What ages do you treat?
We work with clients across the lifespan — from older children and adolescents through to adults and older age. Neurotherapy is adaptable and appropriate across many ages and life-stages. We treat children as young as two years old all the way up to adults in their 80s.
How long until I notice change?
While every person is different, many clients begin to feel subtle improvements (better focus, calmer mind, improved sleep) after the first few sessions. More sustained and stabilised change often emerges with consistent engagement across sessions, family-inclusion and integration of lifestyle supports. Many people notice improvements after between 10 and 20 sessions.
What’s the first step if I want to explore Neurotherapy?
Start with a free consultation (phone or video) to discuss your goals, history and whether Neurotherapy is appropriate for you or your loved one. From there, we schedule the brain-mapping assessment and co-create your tailored Neurotherapy plan.
Do you offer supervision and talk therapy?
Yes. We provide clinical supervision for professionals (e.g., therapists) and talk therapy (family support, carer support, individual therapy). Please look at our fees page for our schedule. Contact us for fees for QEEG and Neurotherapy sessions.
